HIV SYMPTOMS

December 1 is World AIDS Day. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a sexually transmitted disease that can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Although there is no way to tell if you have contracted HIV by symptoms alone, there are some early symptoms that some people may experience. The only way to know for sure if you have HIV is to get tested. Find a local HIV testing center near you.

According to statistics from AIDS.gov, 1 in 8 of the more than 1.2 million people that are living with HIV are unaware they have been infected. Individual symptoms may vary; however, “some people may experience a flu-like illness within 2-4 weeks after HIV infection. But some people may not feel sick during this stage. Flu-like symptoms can include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Rash
  • Night sweats
  • Muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Mouth ulcers”
